Spencer,
       The tail wagging the dog metaphor should be enough.  Imagine a
Chihuahua sporting a Golden Retriever's tail and being excited to see
you.  Now imagine a Saint Bernard with a Toy Poodle's tail with the same
emotion.  Weight and the distance from front feet to back make the
difference.  For instance a Dachshund could support a longer tail than
the Chihuahua.  The weight is further front and acts like a longer lever
does to pry more of a load than a short one.  As for the hitch question,
anything that makes the two vehicles function more as one improves
stability either side to side with anti-sway or up and down with weight
distributing gadgets. 
      Even though you didn't mention it in your post, I'd concede that
the Hensley is more likely to be the ultimate solution to towing safety,
just as Volvo's with side air bags and roof supports make for a safer
accident.  Most of us drive things like my pickup that is excempt from
even the limited safety requirements in an American passenger sedan,
just like most of us can't yet spring for a hitch that we would
doubtless find makes for a more worry free ride.  The debate about the
hitch has run its course, and some of the listees can't resist a few
parting pokes when it comes up again.    I feel safe with my Reese, but
then if I were buying my Stepdaughter a new Bambi and a hitch, I'd hope
to have enough to spring for the Hensley.
