I think gravel is very good.  You will have to shoot Roundup occasionally 
to keep down grass and weeds around the lattice.  You'll also need to keep 
something around the edge to repel or "kill" ants other pests.  Plastic 
under will retain moisture.

I would like to hear from anyone who has professionally produced tie downs.
