Well, I use AT&T.  Haven't been able to use it for 2 weeks out here in the NW.

If you stay at campgrounds almost all of them let you use the phone.... you 
will need a server that has an 800 number...like AOL or earthlink or 
Mindspring so you can connect everywhere.
The big servers have many local numbers too...which is wonderful when 
traveling.

You can also use Flying Js and libraries and Kinkos.
