Don, Take a simple volt/ohm meter set to dc volts.
Disconnect the leads to the battery. Touch the black
probe from the volt meter to the negative wire and the
red to the other. Don't let the naked ends of the
battery leads touch each other or any other metal. Now
have somebody to plug in the trailer. If the Univolt
is working and there are no shorts, you should be
reading about 13 or 14 volts dc. When we bought our
first trailer, sob, the cheap dealer didn't even put a
battery in it and I didn't even know it needed one
until I finally got around to reading the manual, a
month or two later. All the lights etc worked fine
running just off the converter.

btw if you do not have a volt meter, Radio Shack and
others have one that is 15 or 20 bux. I keep one in
the trailer all the time. It comes in handy for
checkiing batteries and trouble shooting wiring probs.
