You don't need direct sun for the solar cells to function.  Obviously 
they function best in full sun but the rays come thru the clouds and I 
have even seen some charge registering even during a rain storm.  Check 
around in your area with those who have solar and learn their  experience 
with this.  Having lived in Minn. I can appreciate your  questions.
