     While the fuel economy of diesels is much better than similar
gasoline engines, a lot of people fool themselves into thinking it
is better still.  I've heard claims as high as 24 mpg on this list
and others, while towing.  It's not true.  My truck gets 13 mpg on
the highway while towing a Safari 25, and I'm delighted with it.
I also know it to be a good estimate of what the vehicle is doing,
for I've taken a cululative measure over 15,000 miles.  By using
a large mileage and keeping records of all the fuel added during
that time, the fluctuations at individuals fill-ups are smoothed out.
     I've talked to others who keep similar records with their gas
engines, and seven to eight mph seems to be about average.  Nine
to ten is considered exceptional.
