It was my understanding the comfort panels were added sometime in the 70's, 
but I may be wrong.  I also replaced mine last summer.  I removed the 
original, took the fabric off, added foam to the existing cardboard and 
recovered with a tapestry with a black background.  I may be extremely 
prejudiced, but I thought it looked quite elegant once replaced.
