Re: [a/s] GPS
Hay (The proper word for "Hi" in Eastern North Carolina) All.
The boating part of my toys has 3 GPS units installed. One of the news items in
the coastal areas this week was the elimination of the "selective error" the
government has always put in the GPS system. The GPS system should now be
accurate to within 10 meters, vs the 100 meters it has been sense the system
started. There has been a thing called "deferential GPS" that requires a
separate receiver that receives a "correction" signal from local coastal ground
stations in order to get the 10 meter accuracy. This correction signal was only
available in coastal areas for boat navigation. The elimination of the error
signal will give everyone the same accuracy deferential GPS has been able to
deliver. The deferential receivers cost $400-$600, so the elimination of the
need for this receiver for free was a good deal. The change went into affect at
8 PM EDT on 5-1-00.
