I would say the F250 and the Excursion are comparable for towing.  

You need to determine your own needs.  Do you like a pickup or a huge SUV?  
Personally I chose the F250 with the crew cab because I felt the dogs would 
be safer in the F-250 cab incase of fast stops.  I carry a lot of heavy stuff 
in the back of the truck and it can't crash into the dogs if I stop short or 
have an accident.

If you have more than 5 passengers to carry you definitely want the Excursion.

I also find it hard to reach stuff in a long SUV.... I installed the Beaver 
Bed in my truck so it's easy to reach everything in the back.

Plus, without the cap a pick up is much handier for hauling than the 
Excursion.

I had 6 Suburbans before I bought this, my very first pick up truck.  I doubt 
I'll ever drive anything but pick up now.
