Bill, on my home system I have a charge controller that eliminates the need
for a diode. Some years ago I did some research on the actual losses
incurred, I found the losses to be negligible and decided not to use the
diodes. As you may know there are some losses on the production side with
the diodes too. Some of the newer solar panels have blocking diodes in their
junction box which helps eliminate shading losses. On our airstream we
installed univolt panels. They are resistant to shading. We very rarely
hookup to electric. Our solar panels provide all the power we need with the
exception of our AC. Joe from Long Island
