[a/s] Ford E40D

Hello Folks,
There seem to be a lot of transmission failures in Ford Super
Duty trucks since about 1990. I've read about Ford replacing them
under warrenty, and I have a friend who had his replaced. What is
wrong with them (the transmissions, not the people)? :-)
One solution I've read about several times is to replace the
transmission with a Jett rebuilt-and-modified E40D. The company
claims to have fixed the flaws that Ford cannot. I understand the
price is harsher shifts, for the claim is that Ford transmissions
slip excessivly, and the slipping burns the fluid, in-turn causing
failure. What do you know about Jett transmissions?
Another fix I've heard of is to replace the tranmission with
an Allison five-speed. Probably this will require adapter plates,
driveshaft modifications, etc. Have any of you done it? How much
does it cost? Does the cruise-control still work? What are the
pros and cons?
What else is there to say about the Ford heavy duty truck
transmissions? Can you recommend a brand and model of cooler? Is
there a computer-chip replacement that solves this problem? What
is important to know about this transmission?
     Thank you.

Take care, Tom
