It was on Interstate 10 at Roscoe, TX. April 29, 1998. It was a
vintage 27' Holiday Rambler. The cause was attributed to a short to
the batteries (3) which caught fire after a long, bumpy detour off I-10
west of Roscoe, Texas. Truckers were flashing their lights, but since we
didn't have a CB, we thought they were warning of something ahead. We saw
smoke in the mirror, pulled over to the side of the road and by that time the
back was on fire. Our extinguisher which we carried in the car, was
inadequate and steam was coming out the door so we didn't open it to get the
larger extinguisher. So we decided to unhitch the Burb. Nearly ready
to drop the trailer, some Dallas firemen on vacation, stopped, took over the
unhooking and told us to drive off as soon as we got in the car. Traffic
was backed up until the fire was out. Even though volunteer firemen used
two trucks of water, the trailer burned to the frame. They hauled off the
remains on a flat bed wrecker. Needless to say, we aren't ones to
drive with the gas turned on. The first thing the firemen did was cut the
tanks off the front of the trailer and toss them far away from the
fire. All that we did recover were a fire box which held jewelry, a metal
file box with the center papers in tact, they were legal papers and receipts,
which helped our insurance claim, and a small cardboard box with some pictures
and several religious articles.
This picture was taken after we unhooked the Burb by a woman who publishes
a weekly newspaper in Roscoe, she took us home, washed our clothes and let us
shower. She offered an overnight stay, but we declined. She and
those firemen were certainly good Samaritans that day.
