You do indeed want to be careful if you're planning to drive Route 1.

Not only are there usually some washouts every year, but the construction
during the summer can drive you batty.  I tell people to stick to I-5 or
US 101 and then cut over when appropriate.

Now, when you get out here, you'll find that the Amador County wineries
are every bit as good as the Napa/Sonoma ones, and the people running
them are much friendlier. Everyone from the Bay area I have come out here
can't believe the difference.

Of course, it's hotter than hades around here in the summer--but you
can't have everything.
