Last year I was camped with my awning open when a very fast thunderstorm
came up.  I had my awning tied down, but one of the stakes came loose.  One
of the solid aluminum (It is a Zip Dee Awning) arms bent to almost 90
degrees.  Luckily the awning itself was not damaged.  It took me about 10
minutes to remove the bent arm (removed one bolt) and closed up the awning.

I replaced the bend arm at a cost of $86 Canadian and that included shipping
charges.

My response to this event was to do a better job of tying down the awning.
I purchased two of those screw in the ground thingamigs usually used to
attach dogs on a long leash.  I tie the awning corners to these.  I doubt
that they would be pulled out.  They are available at Camping World.  You
can see them in the lower right hand corner of page 19 of the 1998
Catalogue.  (sorry I can't find a more recent catalogue) They are called RV
Awning Stabilizers.  Cost in 1998 $8.99.   Good insurance I think.
