Thanks Chris, I'll try those things in the morning ... just got back from
California and am tired of driving, besides it's pitch dark out and COLD.

The thermostat is a Honeywell.  Says on the cover: "Suburban" then "Control by
Honeywell" then "Solid State Ignition."

What you describe in the first paragraph is what I remember of how it used to
function ... say 15 to 30 seconds delay, then it starts up, tries to ignite
three times, if it hasn't lit by then it does shut down.  But you can hear the
igniter spark if you listen closely, and on my unit now you can't hear that.

I make a religion out of pulling, cleaning and reinserting fuses, but will do it
again to be sure.

I did also check that the thermostat was making electrical contact, i.e. when
closed there is no voltage drop across the contacts, when open there is voltage
(12V).  I don't have a lot of fancy electronic test gear (well, I did, but it's
still in Saudi Arabia) but do have a good multimeter.
