[a/s] This Damn Moen Faucet

Okay....

I took the faucet apart... went and bought a new cartridge at Home Deport... 
but I can't get the old cartridge out.  I am less than amused.  

The new cartridge came with directions, but they aren't quite for the same 
one.

My question is... is the "cartridge retainer" a donut looking ring or is ir a 
horseshoe shape?  The donut is on the counter, the horseshoe is still in the 
faucet.  The cartridge will not pull up and out.
