Steve - It really depends on how much you care about your machine. Money
wise, I am not sure you will come out ahead unless you use a bypass oil
filter. With synthetic oil, either in your engine or differentials, your
machine will run cooler with less wear and you will get better mileage. If
you have a new vehicle the recommendation is to not use synthetic oil for
the first 10,000 miles because it keeps the engine from breaking in properly
(seating of the rings) in other words it won't let the engine wear like
regular oil. It all depend on your particular situation as to whether using
synthetic oil makes sense.
